“Write a ten-word murder mystery. (Don’t worry, you don’t have to solve it.) Bonus: Illustrate it!”

This prompt, in its strict word count and obvious limitations, reminds me of the tight prose of Raymond Chandler, author of The Big Sleep, Lady in the Lake, Farewell, My Lovely, and many more noir reads. When you are feeling to chatty, he is a great reminder of the value of carefully choosing your words and honing your thoughts. An example: “It was a blonde. A blonde to make a bishop kick a hole in a stained-glass window.”
