la chanson de roland

Just as in the western world the tale of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer can be recited by young and old, So the Chanson de Roland (The Song of Roland) is in the minds of the French from the 11th century. If you do not know the story, it is worth a read. Epic, classic, full of intrigue, battles, musings and sacrifice it is the oldest surviving significant work of French literature.

It is also a warning to horn players to not blow too hard. Read it and you will see what I mean. Involving Charlemagne, Saracens, Christians, Muslims, and more, there is action galore and plenty of ethical and moral lessons. Adieu Roland!
