geisha hanafuda
hanafuda seasons
sept to dec

Hanafuda is a card game, Japanese in origin, and a form of gambling, first introduced in the 1850s after card games were brought to Japan by missionary Francis Xavier in 1549. The craze caught on and hanafuda became the rage. Twelve sets of four related images form a four-fold “screen”, with each 4-part image depicting a month of the calendar year, I love the photo of the young Maiko playing hanafuda.

I took the various thumbnails and sorted them into visual categories: Japanese images of autumn, as seen by the leaf color; birds with blue wings; all pink flowers; multiple green butterflies.

This project was a visual pleasure!
