Well, probably my favorite song from way back is Skylark, but Hoagey Carmichael and Johnny Mercer. There are plenty of great interpretations by various singers: Maxine Sullivan, Dinah Shore, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Linda Rondstadt, k.d.lang, etc. I think my favorite is actually by Better Midler, who sang the arrangement by Barry Manilow, which is far more poignant than the more upbeat, older versions.

The photo is of Ginger and Johnny Mercer with Hoagey and Ruth Carmichael. Notice the fluidity of the cascading notes in the sheet music. I think it is wonderful that a rather plain little brown bird could inspire such a haunting song.
